A sharp and handsome black & white image by Arthur Knight (unsigned) of Henry Miller at Big Sur's Partington Ridge, circa mid-fifties. A still-handsome Miller sits in a wicker patio chair with right leg bent up onto a nearby concrete bench; his right hand rests on same knee and holds a cigarette. Miller looks straight into the lens, which is positioned close below him. Ocean in the background, foliage overhead. Knight was a frequent photographer of literary figures. His images grace the dustjackets of many dozens of works throughout the 1950's and 60's. With his wife Kit, he was also a noted chronicler of the Beat scene, editing several books and anthologies on the topic. As a proto-Beat, Miller makes for a nice association.
