Los Angeles: (Chavez Defense Fund), [1972]. Newsprint folio, 11.5'' x 17'' approx. Folded horizontally as issued. Toning, some chipping. 4pp. Very good. (Item ID: 23402)

Publication of the defense committee for Ricardo Chavez Ortiz, calling for a Day of Brotherhood ("Dia de Hermanidad") and urging donations to his defense fund. Chavez Ortiz, a Mexican national who hijacked a flight on April 14, 1972 with an unloaded gun, became a focal point of protest for the Chicano Movement. His only demands were the flight's diversion to Los Angeles and a news conference with Spanish-language media: "I am trying to save America, to save the whole world, because we are all crazy." Chavez Ortiz allowed all passengers to disembark unharmed and relinquished his weapon after giving his speech. Text in Spanish, with an English summary of the committee's position ("If the only thing that results out of Ricardo's magnificent act is the unification of our people, then his sacrifice will not have been in vain.") Cover features full-page photo of Chavez Ortiz; illustrated with black and white photos throughout. Scarce. OCLC locates no copies.
