Chicago: 1978-1980. 13 8.5'' x 11'' newsletters, each between 4 and 12pp. Light toning and wear to edges. (Item ID: 23393)

Three-year run of this newsletter formed to support prisoners at Illinois's Pontiac Correctional Center, following the July 1978 uprising -- widely reported as the largest prison riot in state history; defended here as an inevitable rebellion against inhuman conditions and racism -- in which three white guards were killed and several prisoners injured. Following several hours of attacks and fires, police re-secured the prison and withheld visits, phone calls, and showers from inmates until October, the month of the PPSCN's inaugural issue.Illustrated throughout with black and white drawings and photographs, some graphic. Issues are devoted to raising political and legal support for the prisoners charged with capital crimes, opposition to then-Governor Jim Thompson and the death penalty, educating the public on racism and exposing abuses in the prison system, and updates on the trials following on the 1978 uprising: of the 31 black and Latino men indicted by a reportedly all-white grand jury, 17 were prosecuted for the three murders and faced potential execution. Multiple issues print letters directly from the prisoners themselves, speaking out against "the Pontiac frame-up." OCLC locates just three institutional holdings.
