New York: Del Ray/Ballantine, (1976). First edition thus. 8vo. Original light grey boards. Near fine in like jacket. Faint touches of edgewear to DJ. Book is sharp, tight, and clean with only minor shelfwear. Uncommonly well-preserved. And yes, it has the proper code in the gutter of page 183. (Item ID: 23251)

The exception that proves the rule. Normally anathema to collectors and the bane of dealers everywhere ("I think it's a first edition"), here is a book club edition that is actually worth something: the first hardcover issue (following the paperback original) of Alan Dean Foster's adaptation, ghostwritten for Lucas from his screenplay. Released as part of the Science Fiction Book Club and published months before the film's release, the first hardcover trade edition didn't follow until the following year. This makes my nostalgia bone ache. Just look at that cover art (thank you, John Berkey). I was five when STAR WARS was released. And while it is certainly a cliche to point out the movie's impact on the psyche's of those of my generation, I am unembarrassed to admit that I still occasionally have dreams in which I am carrying a light-saber.
