First American edition. Small 8vo. Original blue cloth in red dust jacket. Illustrations by Mary Shepard. Jacket good only. Chipped at edges. Spine faded. One star on front panel penned in. Unclipped ($1.50). Book very good with slight lean. Contemporary ownership inscription (dated 1937) to front endpaper and half-title. Board edges moderately rubbed. Else sound and clean. First US edition / printing of this classic juveline novel and first in Traver's series featuring the Banks children and their magical nanny. Adapted into the equally-classic 1964 movie starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. The American editon was issued in both a red and a blue jacket ó no known priority, but the red is decidely scarcer. "And with that she took out from the empty bag a starched white apron and tied it round her waist. Next she unpacked a large cake of Sunlight Soap, a toothbrush, a packet of hairpins, a bottle of scent, a small folding armchair and a box of throat lozenges.î
