The second book illustrated by Howard Pyle, this beautiful edition of Tennyson's poem closely followed the publication of Yankee Doodle and preceded his classic illustrated Robin Hood by two years. Color plates incorporate elaborate initial capitals and calligraphy into the illustrations, along with Arts and Crafts-style decorative flourishes. Plates show the strong influence of Walter Crane, with an appealing freshness along with some remnants of a slight technical awkwardness that would vanish in later books as Pyle's own distinctive style evolved.
