Paris: Plain Editions, [1931]. First Edition. Small 8vo. Inscribed. Publisher's light-gray paper covered boards over gray paper spine with printed paper spine label. Foxing to endpapers, minor shelfwear. Else clean and sound: near fine. INSCRIBED by Stein in a contemporary hand to front free endpaper: "For Charles Nelson, / The only way to do is to read / and write and do both all the / time and have something inside / yourself beside." 395pp. (Item ID: 22121)

First edition, one of 1000 copies printed the Darantiere Press for Alice Tolklas' imprint, which she founded to publish Stein's writings. One of Stein's best and most important works, likely inscribed to Charles Nelson of Minneapolis, who attended medical school with Stein at Johns Hopkins. Books genuinely inscribed by Stein are uncommon. A beautiful copy, with a warm inscription entirely appropriate (and apparently unique) to this book. [Sawyer 78-79]. [Wilson A17.a].
