Thom Holme's RECORDINGS began as a rather modest newsletter covering an unusual mix of more daring new wave and post punk bands (Talking Heads, Durutti Column, Cabaret Voltaire, Pere Ubu, DNA), experimental rock (Zappa, Fripp), and more traditional experimental and electronic composers (Glenn Branca, John Cage, Eno). It ran for eleven issues in its newsletter format (here represented by a modest reprint compilation published by Holmes for new subscribers) before switching to a more traditional magazine format, where it ran for an additional nine issues. And unlike many other music zines of the period, a decided sense of seriousness and scholarship pervades. Book reviews and reviews of radio stations also included. Remains a strong resource. Holmes would go on to compile the only authorized discography of John Cage, and his respected history "Electronic and Experimental Music: Technology, Music, and Culture" has gone through several editions. OCLC located only ten holdings for RECORDINGS, and only a small handful of complete runs. Uncommon.
