Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1954. First American edition. 8vo. Original blue and green cloth in dust jacket (by Walter H. Lorraine). Jacket rubbed and edgeworn, with large chip to top of spine. Unclipped ($3.00). Cloth a little soiled with some rubbing at the extremities. Tape offsetting to front and rear endpapers. Previous owner's penned inscription to front endpaper, with small stamp as well, and "Copy 2" noted above. Else sound. A little shabby, but presentable. About very good overall. (Item ID: 22018)

First US edition (UK edition precedes slightly) of this classic Philip Marlow, Edgar Award-winning noir ó which Chandler himself considered his best. "The girl gave him a look which ought to have stuck at least four inches out of his back." [Bruccoli A10.1.b].
