(Glendale, CA): (Umbrella Associates), 1978-1980. First Edition. 4to. Mostly stapled self-wraps; several unbound as issued. All about very good plus. Majority show a light vertical crease down the middle, hint of yellowing to edges. But overall clean, bright. Binding sound. Each issue about 20pp. including covers. (Item ID: 19275)

First eighteen issues of this long-running (until 2008) arts journal, whose founder and head editor was the librarian and curator Judith Hoffberg. UMBRELLA came to be known for its specialty in covering artist's books, mail art, and Fluxus-related activities, a tendency that can be observed in the first issue, which devotes an article to Ulises Carrion's Other Books and So shop in Amsterdam. Other issues in this run include pieces on Wallace Berman, Bern Porter, and Guglielmo Cavellini. In addition to profiles and short articles, the magazine consisted primarily of a book review section (edited by Ken Friedman) as well as lengthy reviews of international art news, with a focus on printed matter. An important record of the early years of artist's books and mail art as increasingly recognized art practices. [Allen, ARTISTS' MAGAZINES, p. 306].
