np: np, 1970. First Edition. 8vo. Publisher's wraps in original glassine. Touches of toning and edgewear to glassine, with price sticker at front flap. Trivial touches of wear to wraps. Interior bright and clean, with distributor label pasted at inside of rear wrap. Near fine. (Item ID: 17728)

The last of Ruscha's books in his "house style," a 7" x 5.5" format, with forty-eight pages and a three-line title printed on cream wrappers with a glassine dust jacket. A selection of sober black and white photographs of vacant lots in and around Los Angeles. The opportunities of the title are reflected in the openness of the vacant lots, a blank slate on which one can project their fantasies of a different life, a sort of synecdoche of Los Angeles. As Peter Schjeldahl said of Ruscha's work, "To know the art of Ed Ruscha, you should know something about Los Angeles, and the reverse: knowing something about Ruscha's art with help you with Los Angeles." [Phillpot, CATALOGUE RAISONNE, 74].
