Eisler came to the US in the early 1940s for a research project on film music, resulting in the so-called Film Music Project, creating alternate scores for hollywood films such as THE GRAPES OF WRATH and the publication of this book. As Breixo Viejo states in FILM BOOKS: A Visual History, "COMPOSING FOR FILMS is one of the most important volumes on film music both for its lucid critique of Hollywood's 'prejudices and bad habits' in scoring movies and for the way it propsed a new and experimental way of writing for the screen." A few months before its publication, Eisler became one of the first film professionals to be investigated by the House Un-American Activities Committee and was forced to leave the US in 1948.
