Norfolk, CT: New Directions, 1964. First Edition. 8vo. Publisher's printed wraps. ASSOCIATION COPY, INSCRIBED to John Barth, "For John Barth/ with my greatest admiration/ John Hawkes/ Baltimore/ October 9. 1995" and additionally signed by Barth with his stamp at ffep. Minor edgewear and toning to wraps. Spine creased. Rear panel suffers spots of foxing. Interior clean and bright. Sound. Very good. 210pp. (Item ID: 16710)

Handsome copy of this first edition, and a remarkable association between two important figures of postmodern American fiction. Signed just three years before Hawkes' death. In a remembrance published in the NYRB, Barth said of Hawkes, "we lost one of the steadily brightest (and paradoxically darkest) lights of American letters through our century's second half."
