New York: Scribners, 1900. First Edition. 8vo. Publisher's paper-covered boards with titles in gilt at front board and spine. Slight spine lean. Corners and spine extremities mildly bumped and chipped. Paper cracked at joints and chipped away at head of spine, as usual. Previous owner's name at ffep. Minor toning to page edges. Small stain at lower corner effecting preliminary pages. Sound. Interior quite bright. Very good. 156 pp. (Item ID: 16510)

Though THE TOUCHSTONE is Wharton's fourth book, it was her first novel, addressing themes that would manifest in her later work such as The House of Mirth, Ethan Frome, and The Age of Innocence. An unusually handsome copy from the early carreer of an icon of American literature.
