First American printing of the influential work from 19th and early 20th Century Austrian biologist-philosopher. Ownership inscription of Dr. J.C. Hoffman of Chicago to title page. A 1906 Collier's article identifies Hoffman as a noted "quack" physician, advertising in local papers a "never-failing, harmless home cure" for addiction to morphine, opium, or laudanum that, upon investigation, proved to be nothing more than morphine disguised. With several mounted anatomical illustrations to endpapers and marginalia in his hand throughout. 390pp.
