New York: The Poetry Project at St. Marks Church In-The-Bowery, 1968. First Edition. Folio. 8.5" x 14 ". Side-stapled pictorial offset wraps. Contents mimegraphed. Covers rubbed with some toning and edgewear. Else clean and sound. Very good. [43]pp. rectos only plus covers (by Tom Clark). (Item ID: 14526)

Contributors include Ted Berrigan (four poems), Vito Acconci, Clark Coolidge, John Giorno, Gerard Malanga, Carter Ratcliff, Joseph Ceravolo, Larry Fagin, Andrei Codrescu, Lewis Warsh and Ron Padgett (whose name should appear on the table of contents, but doesn't). Most significant, however, for the first appearance of Jim Carroll's THE BASKETBALL DIARIES. Contains two entries, dated Feb. 4, 1965 (We just got into town for the very spectacular National High School All Star Basketball Game.), and Feb. 5, 1965 (After a very poor breakfast Joe Slapstick calls Corky and I aside . . .), later printed as Winter 66 on pages 153-55 of The Basketball Diaries. Of further interest for the many name changes the author made between this appearance and final publication. An important document. Carroll was just seventeen when these were printed and still a decade away from the publication of his cult classic. A rare production, marking the earliest appearance of Carroll's landmark work and significantly more scarce than than its first edition. Some Carroll source identify his Adventures in Poetry appearance as the first publication of Basketball Diaries, but that didn't appear until July of '68.
