Orignal poem in praise of Carmel, CA penned to front endpaper: "Wise men say, and I know well, / There is only one Carmel. / Romes and Londons are to burn. / From them in contempt I turn / Who perpetually seek / The undeniably unique. / Many roses, many trilliums, / Many Helens, many (?). / Only one of Mrs. Williams. / Leonard Bacon / January 8th 1924"
